Sara’s Story

“I’m feeling in control and doing the things that really matter to me. I have my life back.”

Recognizing anxiety warning signs

I’ve always been a worrier, but a few months ago, it felt like it was getting out of control. My mom was sick and ended up in the hospital. I guess it made sense to worry about her health, but then it was like I was worrying about everything — even little things.

I worried constantly about my kids even though they were healthy and doing well in school. I worried about my job even though my boss said I was doing great. My body felt tense all the time, and I was getting irritable with coworkers. I would even lay awake in bed at night unable to make my mind stop. I didn’t want to leave the house, and I couldn’t enjoy time with family. My husband kept telling me to relax and didn’t understand why I felt this way.

Getting treatment for anxiety

My best friend recommended I seek professional help. So, I saw a therapist who gave me tools to manage anxiety, including breathing and mindfulness exercises. We talked about what was really important to me and how I could reclaim my life.

Each week I set goals for practicing these new skills. It took some time and follow-through on my part, but my therapist was with me every step of the way.

Feeling hopeful for the future

I’ve met my treatment goals and feel much better. It’s been a few months since I finished therapy, and I’m still feeling in control. My anxiety isn’t holding me back, and I’m doing the things that really matter to me. I have my life back.
