Chairman, CEO and President of United Concordia Dental
Edward Shellard, DMD, is the chairman, CEO and president of United Concordia Dental, a subsidiary of Highmark Inc. He was appointed president in April 2022; elected its president and CEO in May 2022; and chair in January 2023.
With more than 30 years of experience, including seven as a practicing dentist, Dr. Shellard has extensive knowledge and expertise in all facets of the dental industry. He served as chief dental officer at Carestream Dental, where he led the company’s advanced research, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, and environmental health and safety efforts while looking for new ways to add customer value. He also held chief commercial officer and chief marketing officer roles in his 14-year tenure with the company, overseeing global sales, marketing and business development efforts. His business background includes extensive experience in sales and mergers and acquisitions.
Prior to joining Carestream Dental, Dr. Shellard served as president and CEO of Dental Technologies Inc., a dental laboratory consortium based in Dublin, California.
Additionally, Dr. Shellard held various senior management positions – including president – during his more than 12 years at the Kerr Corporation. While there, he gained experience in clinical affairs, business development, research and marketing, and was instrumental in the acquisition and integration of numerous companies.
Dr. Shellard began his career as a general dentist and practiced from 1987 to 1994 in Rochester, New York. He served as an adjunct associate professor at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in California from 1996 to 2002.
Additionally, Dr. Shellard is a current or former member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, International Association for Dental Research (IADR), Academy of Dental Materials, Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and American Association for Dental Research (AADR), where he served as the president of its Dental Materials Group.
He has co-authored over 50 research studies related to the investigation of adhesive and restorative materials, impression materials, curing lights, infection control, and rotary instruments. Also, he has 16 granted patents or applications related to advanced dental imaging and dental technologies.
Dr. Shellard holds a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University, a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from Case Western Reserve University and a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University, and is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists.
He serves as a board member for the Harvard School of Dental Medicine's Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine, the United Way of the Capital Region and TeamSmile. Dr. Shellard’s leadership has been recognized by his inclusion in the Central Penn Business Journal Power List for Health Care in both 2024 and 2025, as well as its CPBJ 300 List recognizing the top business leaders shaping the economy in central Pa.
