Buffalo, N.Y. (February 12, 2025) — This Black History Month, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, M&T Bank, and the American Red Cross joined forces to address the critical need for blood donations to support individuals with sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder disproportionately affecting the Black community.
Sickle cell disease affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States, with one in 365 Black American births impacted. Patients often require numerous blood transfusions annually, highlighting the urgent need for a diverse blood supply to prevent life-threatening complications.
This joint blood drive, a first-time collaboration between Highmark BCBS and M&T Bank, built upon Highmark’s inaugural sickle cell blood drive and awareness panel held in 2024. The event demonstrated a shared commitment to tackling health inequities and responding to the immediate needs of the community. The event garnered an impressive response, with 75 units of life-saving blood collected.
The event also featured a deeply moving personal story from Highmark BCBS supervisor, Domonique Fields, who shared the heartbreaking journey of her son, Kyler, who tragically lost his life to sickle cell disease after a six-year battle. Domonique’s powerful testimony served as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of readily available, diverse blood donations.
Fields shared, “Seeing two leading Western New York corporations unite for such a vital cause, and the incredible community turnout, underscored the impact we can have when we work together. My deepest gratitude goes to everyone involved, especially the donors whose generosity will save lives and raise crucial awareness about sickle cell disease within the Black community. This is just the beginning; we must continue to build these partnerships and advocate for those affected by blood disorders.”
Equally impactful was the story shared by Juanita McClain, president of Sickle Cell Warriors of Buffalo, who provided a poignant firsthand account of the challenges faced by those living with sickle cell disease. In a surprise announcement, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield presented McClain with a $1000 donation to Sickle Cell Warriors on behalf of its employees, further underscoring its commitment to supporting the organization and the community it serves.
